Taxonomies in OS

This section explains taxonomies and usage of taxonomies in Rubick OS

Overview

In eCommerce, taxonomy refers to systematically classifying and organising products into categories and subcategories. This helps structure an online store to make it easy for customers to find and browse products. A well-designed taxonomy enhances the user experience, improves searchability, and can positively impact sales.

Rubick OS syncs and stores your taxonomy for future use to enable consistency across the category. Rubick OS stores categories, sub-categories, and attributes and configures mandatory and non-mandatory attributes.

Know your Taxonomy

A product taxonomy includes a category tree, categories ranging from L1 to L7, attributes defining the products in that category, and mandatory and non-mandatory attributes.

An example of a category tree is

Homepage >> Electronics >> Computers and Accessories >> Laptops

The above view is called a breadcrumb and is helpful to the user when navigating categories and sub-categories. Here, Electronics is the L1 category, Computer and Accessories is the L2 category, and Laptops is the L3 category. L2 and L3 are generically called sub-categories, and L1 is the main category.

Attributes can be defined as mandatory and non-mandatory at one of the category levels depending on your category classification and product complexity.

The same products on your website might have a completely different taxonomy in their marketplace. Please ensure to check before submission to avoid rejection. Rubick OS highlight the taxonomies of different marketplaces in the SKU editor.

Attributes in a Taxonomy

The properties used to describe a product are called product attributes. While you might track your products using other product identifiers, consumers use natural language to define the characteristics of products they seek to buy. Thus, product attributes play a critical role in the discovery and sale of products. They assist online shoppers in finding, comparing, and choosing the product that fulfils their needs.

To make your catalogue comprehensive and discoverable, it is recommended to define as many attributes as possible to explain the product's characteristics. It is also important to harmonize the attributes and define mandatory and non-mandatory attributes for a particular category.

Generic Taxonomies in OS

When OS syncs your products to the PIM, it automatically captures and stores all the required taxonomies. These taxonomies can't be accessed by anyone else unless autorized by you.

On OS, a taxonomy can be marked as generic (refer to screenshot above). This means that the taxonomy is now public and ready for use by any user on the OS for their products outside of your organization. You can provide everyone on the OS with open access to your taxonomy. This enables other users to consume your taxonomy to create ready-to-upload catalogs on your site.

For the popular marketplaces in India and overseas, we have pre-defined taxonomies created for popular categories that can be accessed to create your catalog.
